What Is a Schengen Visa?
A Schengen visa allows visa-required non-EU nationals to make short visits to countries in the Schengen area.
A standard short-stay Schengen visa can permit travel for purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, business and certain other temporary activities.
Short stays are generally limited to a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period, although the actual period authorised by a particular visa may be shorter.
Which Country Should You Apply To?
If your trip involves one Schengen country, the application will normally be made through that country's consular authorities.
If the itinerary involves more than one Schengen country, the correct application country depends on the main destination, taking account of the purpose and length of the proposed stays.
UK Visa Plan can review the itinerary and help identify the appropriate published application route before the application is prepared.
Who Needs a Schengen Visa?
Whether a visa is required depends principally on the traveller's nationality and circumstances.
Many people lawfully living in the UK are not British citizens and require a visa before travelling to the Schengen area. Others can travel visa-free for short visits.
Before preparing an application, we check whether the proposed application appears to be the appropriate process for the applicant and intended journey.

Schengen Travel Medical Insurance
Schengen visa applicants are normally required to provide appropriate medical travel insurance covering the proposed visit.
UK Visa Plan can check that insurance evidence appears to address the published requirements for the application, but the insurance policy itself is purchased separately from an insurer.
When Should You Apply?
Schengen visa applications can generally be lodged up to 6 months before the intended journey and should normally be submitted at least 15 days before travel.
Appointment availability varies considerably between countries, consulates and visa application centres, so applicants should begin preparing as early as reasonably possible.
Visa Application Centre Appointment
Depending on the country and application route, the applicant may need to book and attend an appointment at an embassy, consulate or external visa application centre.
UK Visa Plan can assist with the practical appointment process where appointments are available, but appointment availability is controlled by the relevant authority or service provider and cannot be guaranteed.
Attending to Submit Your Application
UK Visa Plan can prepare the application and supporting-document pack, but applicants will normally need to lodge the application through the relevant consular or visa application centre process themselves.
Where biometric enrolment is required, fingerprints are taken when the application is lodged. Some applicants may be exempt from providing new fingerprints in particular circumstances.

The standard processing period is normally 15 calendar days after an admissible application has been lodged.
Individual applications can take longer and the examination period may extend to 45 days where further scrutiny or additional documents are required.
Applicants should not rely on the standard processing period when making non-refundable travel arrangements.
UK Visa Plan cannot guarantee processing times, appointment availability or the outcome of an application.
